Product Innovation

While the Company has worked on Guideline 4 “Work Style Innovation for Individuals and the Organization” as the core for all measures in the mid-term business plan BF-2, after fiscal 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on corporate activities, we are focusing on the work style innovation adapted to the environment with COVID-19.

SDG to which the Bando Group contributes SDG

Expanded the scope of the work-from-home system

Work-from-home

The work-from-home system, which was introduced in April 2018, was only available for employees caring for their children or family members. However, as a preventive measure against COVID-19, we tentatively made it available for other employees from March 2020.
According to the work-from-home survey of employees, those who agree with the system say that “I can use my time effectively by reducing commuting time,” “I tried it, and it didn't have any adverse impact on my work,” “It improved efficiency in some work,” “I want to increase my options of work style.”

So, we decided to make it a permanent system, rather than a tentative measure to prevent infections, and, from April 2021, allow all employees to work from home if they can improve productivity by concentrating self-directedly. By combining this system with the conventional work style where employees work together at office and exchange and develop ideas, we aim to achieve better results in the entire organization. We also reformed the system by taking into account the viewpoint of securing a business continuity plan using remote work in case of emergency (natural disasters, infectious diseases, traffic hindrance, etc.). As there were also negative opinions in the above-mentioned survey such that “It is difficult to communicate with others,” and “It is difficult to do work/labor management,” we will enhance our response to these issues.

Offices with decreased number of employees coming into work

Selected as a “2021 Health & Productivity Stock Selection” and recognized in the “2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program (White 500)”

In fiscal 2020, COVID-19 changed our work style and living environment drastically, which made lots of us re-realize the importance of being healthy.
By positioning physical and mental health of all employees as the Company’s foundation in “Employee Health Management Declaration,” the Group strives to work “closely” to create a workplace where employees make efforts to promote their good health with “excitement” and work “enthusiastically.”
To realize the Health Declaration, we formed the “Healthy and Enthusiastic Workplace Creation Team” jointly with employees to support employees to realize their own “health vision” and promote the creation of a vibrant workplace. As a target of creating healthy and enthusiastic workplace, we set the “lost days rate of 0.4% or less,” and to achieve this target, we require all employees to get regular medical checkup, special medical checkup, and the secondary inspection and use the results of these checkups as well as lifestyle habit surveys to address identified health issues and encourage employees to change their lifestyle habits by holding fitness classes and offering health guidance by a public health nurse. Also, as part of data health program jointly operated with a health insurance association, we promote a dental checkup as a collaborative health activity using a health scoring report.

These initiatives were evaluated, and the Company was selected as a “2021 Health & Productivity Stock Selection” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (“METI”) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This is the fourth time to be selected, the most frequent among rubber-related companies. We were also recognized in the “2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program (White 500).” We will continue to focus on creating a workplace where every employee strives to maintain good health and work enthusiastically.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT ―Results of work-from-home survey

Survey period: from April 23,
2020 to May 8, 2020 No. of responses:266

The sum of “It is not as bad as I expected” and “I can concentrate on my work better at home” accounted for three quarters.

Many employees tried the Japanese radio/TV calisthenics (a series of light exercises conducted along with piano music from the radio/TV) to compensate for lack of physical activity due to not commuting, and some started walking, running or stretching exercise.

As for paper documents and materials, we received many opinions suggesting to use this occasion to promote digitization as processing them increases burden on employees working at office.

There were also quite a few voices to thank and ask for special treatment for those who cannot choose to work from home such as sales personnel for whom it is important to meet customers and employees who work at plants that handle physical "products."

The total of “Changed significantly” and “Changed” accounted for a little less than 70%, showing that many employees’ awareness has changed.

Various efforts were made to separate work and personal life and stay focused on work such as “wearing work clothes during work hours even at home” and “doing the exercise between works just like when I’m working at office.”

They made full use of a video conference system and chat tools to be creative in checking and communicating with their subordinates and colleagues such as “using a video conference system for group meetings,” “using a chat tool for simple conversation and using a video conference system to talk face-to-face for more complicated conversation” and “sharing a work list of each team member online to visualize their work and workload.”
