Set a Goal Toward Realizing Carbon Neutrality by 2050

By further strengthening our initiatives for “Energy,” one of our material issues, we will contribute to the achievement of the targets in the new mid-to-long term management plan.

Set the realization of carbon neutrality
as non-financial indicator in the new mid-to-long term management plan and accelerate initiatives

The Group has set “Realization of carbon neutrality by 2050” and fiscal 2030 target (38% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to 54,703 tons in fiscal 2013 on a non-consolidated basis) as non-financial indicators in the new mid-to-long term management plan and reflected them in various priority measures and promotion systems. Our initiatives currently underway based on them include a switch to new manufacturing methods, proactive introduction of solar power generation systems, upgrade of transformers to those meeting the energy efficiency standard under the Top Runner Program, and additional measures against heat at our plants.

Currently, we are accelerating the introduction of solar power generation systems in particular. While the system has already been introduced in all plants in Japan, the facilities at Wakayama Plant were expanded in fiscal 2022, which increased the ratio of solar energy in all energy sources at the plant to approximately 12% and reduced CO2 emissions by 183t-CO2/year (a reduction of about 7% in the entire plant).

Introduction of solar power generation systems is in progress in overseas bases

Our overseas bases are also accelerating the introduction of solar power generation systems. Our subsidiaries in Thailand and India introduced solar power generation systems in April 2021 and in August 2022, respectively.
As a result, Bando Manufacturing (Thailand) Ltd. generated about 10% of its total electricity consumption from solar power and reduced CO2 emissions by 738t-CO2/year, and Bando (India) Pvt. Ltd. generated about 30% of its total electricity consumption from solar power and reduced CO2 emissions by about 350t-CO2/year. We also started a survey on environmental measures, including carbon neutrality initiatives at overseas bases in the future, in order to establish a management system tailored to the situation in each overseas region.

Future introduction plans and initiatives for carbon neutrality

Our plan in fiscal 2023 includes an introduction of solar power generation systems to our Chinese subsidiaries, removal of heavy oil boilers at Ashikaga Plant, upgrade of transformers and compressors at Nankai Plant, renewal of motors at Kakogawa Plant and systematic introduction of energy-saving equipment such as switching to LED lighting, which is already underway at each plant. We also plan to accelerate our efforts for efficient manufacturing through implementing new manufacturing methods, such as the launch of a new energy-efficient manufacturing line at Nankai Plant.
